This 4-week intermediate metalsmithing course introduces students to foundational techniques while guiding them through the creation of a finished brooch. In Week 1, students begin with introductions, learn the importance of sketching as a design tool, and explore ideation. Technical demonstrations cover studio safety, sawing and piercing, filing, using the flex shaft (Dremel), and basic torch use. Students complete a piercing activity to practice these skills.
In Week 2, the class begins with a sketch debrief, followed by demonstrations on general soldering techniques, creating pin components, and constructing bezels. Students apply these techniques during work time and complete a bezel ring as their take-home project. Week 3 focuses on construction methods and advancing brooch designs. Demonstrations include riveting, creating tabs through creasing, incorporating alternative materials, and optional chain making. Students continue working on their brooches and may practice chain making as an additional skill. In Week 4, students dedicate time to finishing their brooches, refining details, and preparing for a group critique. The course concludes with a discussion of each student’s work and process, and students leave with a completed brooch.
