Gardening Goes Underground

Adult Enrichment -
Adult Winter 2026

Root vegetables are some of the easiest and most successful crops to grow in Sublette County. In this class, we will explore how to grow several different root crops, including potatoes, garlic, onions, beets, carrots, and turnips. Arlinda will share different ways to grow root vegetables, such as raised beds, in ground beds, and containers. She will focus on the new galvanized beds and the best soil mixes to add to them. Root vegetables need a tweaked diet, and Arlinda will share her ideas about fertilizers needed for optimum growth of root vegetables. Most root vegetables store well under the right conditions; participants will learn how to do that in order to enjoy them all winter.

Arlinda J McLaughlin

Arlinda McLaughlin was a teacher at Pinedale Elementary School from 1975 to 2010. She grew up on a wheat farm in western Kansas, in the small town of Damar, a community of French immigrants from Quebec, Canada. In 1975, Arlinda and her husband, Ken, moved to Pinedale with their son, Sean, and loved the outdoor adventures of the community. Eron joined the family some years later. Now, their family includes daughters-in-laws, Amy and Kristin, and grandchildren, Declan, Fiona, and Orion.

After her retirement, Arlinda enlarged her vegetable and flower gardens and studied to become a Sublette County Master Gardener. Kaidi Raney, one of Arlinda’s first students at Pinedale Elementary and the current Education Coordinator of Sublette BOCES, invited Arlinda to teach a gardening class for adults. Since then, Arlinda has continued to teach gardening classes at BOCES for both children and adults. She also teaches gardening workshops for the Sublette County Libraries and the Children’s Discovery Center. In her gardens, Arlinda grows vegetables and flowers in raised beds, in-ground beds, ranch lick tubs, and other containers and attracts pollinators with a wide variety of pollinator-friendly herbs and flowers.
